Dear Sesuit Neck Property Owners:
As we emerge from a year like no other in recent memory, we look forward to warm summer days on Sesuit Neck that are safer and more normal than we experienced last year. We hope that all family and friends of our members have been able to stay safe and healthy during the pandemic.
Our Welcome-to-Summer SNPOA Gathering will be on Sunday, June 27
We will hold our members only welcome to summer event at the Dennis Yacht Club on Sunday, June 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. In line with state directives, masks are optional for fully vaccinated individuals.
We are looking forward to a wonderful evening. Please come to reconnect with old friends and meet new friends. In addition to enjoying refreshments and each other’s company, we will have a brief business meeting and welcome our speaker, Dawson Farber.
Special speaker at the June 27 Meeting
We are delighted that Dawson Farber, the Harbormaster for the Town of Dennis, once again will join us for our June meeting. He will speak to us about what is happening today and what he sees for the future. In particular, he will discuss the grant from the Massachusetts Seaport Economic Council and the matching funds from the Town of Dennis to be used for design and permitting services for improvements to the municipal marina on the west side of Sesuit Harbor. (See more information below.)
Please RSVP for the June 27 Meeting!
Please respond to Bumpty McGrath by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone 914-714-4725. The fee is $15 per person. Whether you pay in advance or in cash at the door, it is very important for you to let us know if you plan to attend the meeting so we can be sure to order enough food. Remember to bring a credit card to use at the bar as DYC has requested use of credit cards only.
The SNPOA Annual Meeting will be on Sunday, August 29
Looking ahead, our Annual Meeting will take place at the Dennis Yacht Club on Sunday, August 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Please make a note in your calendars!
Why join SNPOA?
SNPOA works all year long to keep abreast of any situations that might impact our members and the character of Sesuit Neck. When such issues arise, we follow up with the Town of Dennis or others so we can assure our members stay informed and be represented as necessary.
If you are aware of new neighbors who have moved to Sesuit Neck, please welcome them and let them know about SNPOA. Be sure to pass along a copy of this newsletter and the Membership and Dues Form (see attached) for them to fill out and mail in. If you have any questions, please contact Carol Hurley at email@example.com
State grant awarded to the municipal marina
As mentioned above, the Town’s Harbormaster, Dawson Farber, will speak about this at our June 27 meeting. In February 2020, the Massachusetts Seaport Economic Council awarded a $240,000 grant to the Town of Dennis for design and permitting services for improvements to the municipal marina on the west side of Sesuit Harbor. In order for the grant money to be put to use, the Town had to approve a match of $60,000. This was approved at the Town Meeting in October 2020.
The Town is in the process of negotiating a contract for design services with Catalyst Architecture to develop a preliminary plan which would trigger the permitting process and reviews by conservation, fire, police, building inspector, and other departments. Then, funds would need to be found for construction with total costs that are expected to be about $3 million. If the planned improvements go forward, these will likely include upgraded buildings on the site as well as changes to the existing entrance and exit to the municipal marina area.
SNPOA efforts in regard to traffic and safety
SNPOA members often express concern about traffic and safety on Sesuit Neck. This is in part due to rapid growth in the harbor area in recent years. As a result, a few years ago SNPOA began a campaign seeking that the Town of Dennis enforce compliance with existing zoning, parking and other pertinent ordinances, rules and regulations.
Over the years, and this year in particular, we have seen a marked increase in the number of walkers on our roads. Please be aware of this and make an effort to keep your shrubs and bushes well trimmed by the side of the road. This will allow walkers to use both sides of the street and be able to see approaching vehicles as well as help drivers to have a clear view of walkers. As always, please drive slowly and carefully on our roads.
New speed sign
In response to the concerns of many members about safety on our roads, SNPOA has been working with the Dennis Road Safety Task Force (RSTF) and various Town Departments to get approval for a solar powered speed limit sign on Sesuit Neck Road between Bridge Street and the Town Marina. In early 2020, the Town identified the sign that would be acceptable and SNPOA agreed to pay up to $7,000 for its purchase and installation. It was SNPOA’s assumption that the Town would own the sign and cover any maintenance costs.
At its August 2020 meeting, however, the RSTF tabled the SNPOA sign request pending the Town’s acceptance of legal authorization and asked the Engineering Department to work with the Town’s legal counsel on the issue. Subsequently, the Town sent a draft lease to SNPOA providing for SNPOA to lease a small parcel of land (4 feet by 12 feet) along Sesuit Neck Road and to install a solar powered speed sign on that parcel. Under the proposed lease, SNPOA would be responsible for the purchase, installation, operation and maintenance of the sign. SNPOA would also have to obtain public liability insurance and indemnify the Town against any claims. Needless to say, SNPOA was surprised and disappointed by this shift in approach and at this point there are no plans to proceed with a lease. SNPOA representatives did meet with the RSTF to discuss our reservations about the proposed lease and to reiterate our willingness to pay for the purchase and installation of a sign that would be owned and operated by the Town.
Homeowners on Sesuit Neck are reminded that our area has been designated as an historic district. Any changes to our properties must be approved under the jurisdiction of the Old Kings Regional Historic District Committee at the Town of Dennis.
Dennis Conservation Commission
We thank the Dennis Conservation Commission for their past town wide litter cleanup efforts including on Sesuit Neck. For the last few years, the spring cleanup was canceled due to the pandemic. We encourage everyone to help keep our neighborhood clean of litter by looking after your own street frontage area and carrying a bag on your walks to pick up trash you might see along the way.
SNPOA participates in the Dennis Adopt-A-Beach program. Please observe all posted rules and regulations and respect the lifeguards assigned to our beach.
We would like to express our wholehearted thanks to George Machon for the wonderful job he has done to clean our beach. If you would like to get involved with efforts to do on-going beach cleanup, please contact SNPOA by email at SNPOA_Correspondence@snpoa.org or by mail at SNPOA, P.O. Box 1334, East Dennis MA 02641
Dues and Communications
Annual SNPOA dues of $50 (unchanged for many years) are due by July 15. We have attached the Membership and Dues Form to this email. Please print it out, update your contact information as needed, and send the form along with a check made out to SNPOA for $50 to SNPOA, PO Box 1334, East Dennis MA 02641.
Please provide us with your email address(es) so you can receive important emailed notices and information. This is the fastest and most direct method of communication with our members.
As much as possible, we will try to send hard copy versions to members without email access so if you do not have an email address it is important to be sure we have your proper mailing address for both the winter and summer seasons.
Directories that include the most up to date listing of members are available to all SNPOA members who have paid their dues in full. We will have a number of new directories available at the June 27 gathering.
Please note that the sole purpose of the directory is to aid communications and neighborhood interactions within the Sesuit Neck Property Owners Association. The directory cannot be used for any business, political or similar purpose. Please respect the privacy of our members.
As a reminder, please take a moment to look at the SNPOA website. It is a treasure trove of valuable information including a wonderful history of the area, links to many local attractions and institutions, and a number of photographs taken by SNPOA members. It also includes an online Member Directory on the password protected membership page. Please visit www.snpoa.org
We give special thanks to Chris Wilkins who maintains our website and sends out emailed communications, and to our past SNPOA President, Cindy Harper, who continues to maintain and update our member database.
Also, many thanks to Bumpty McGrath who handles arrangements for our members’ meetings at the Dennis Yacht Club.
This year we welcome Mary Little to the SNPOA Board and thank Polly Woodworth who decided to step down from the Board after many years of service.
We also thank Norm Neiterman for his work as our Treasurer for a number of years. Joel Crowell will take over the Treasurer’s duties and Norm will continue as a Board member.
If anyone has an interest in joining the SNPOA Board, please let us know by email at SNPOA_Correspondence@snpoa.org or by mail at SNPOA, P.O. Box 1334, East Dennis MA 02641.
